So here I am two weeks before my RNY surgery, and my surgeon has started me on a liver shrinking diet. If you’re anything like my very supportive best friend, you’re thinking “That sounds disgusting. What in the hell is that?” During the agonizing months-long process of clearing all the required hoops and hurdles leading up to actually getting a surgery date, I had researched this possibility. At the beginning of this journey, my surgeon ordered an abdominal ultrasound in order to check out all my organs and specifically to measure the liver since fatty liver is often present in an obese patient. Apparently, the liver must be moved out of the way in order to perform the RNY surgery. If the liver is unusual in any way, surgeons often prescribe a liver shrinking diet for the two weeks prior to the actual surgery. Well, as my luck goes, I have a slightly enlarged fatty liver. Yay, me!! Most liver shrinking diet options I researched consisted of all liquids for two weeks pre-op. Luckily, my surgeon’s team has developed a diet that contains actual food. Very limited options in small portions, but still real food.
All that to say…WARNING!!! You may hear a lot from me over these two weeks. I may write when I want to snack, and it may not be pretty. But for now, I’m off to eat a pre-portioned tuna packet with my “free” dill pickles. I hope you enjoy your delicious dirty food today.
