What’s Up With Social Media?

I was laying in bed last night unable to sleep and started thinking about social media. Oh, the things dreams are made of, right? In conjunction with starting this blog, I initiated pages on several social media platforms under the “Weigh Over My Head” blog name. My intention, at the time, was to use those platforms simply as a way to make my posts more visible in hopes of reaching a wider audience. Many people look for all their information through social media. That’s neither good nor bad and is pretty much how I roll myself. Just about every news agency, business, non-profit, etc (you get the idea) has a social media presence, so it is possible to get accurate information from legit sources through various social platforms. On the other hand, some people have serious concerns when it comes to social media and would not have access to my blog if I only went that route. As a result of all this crazy thought-juggling in the middle of the night, I started trying to map out how I could use social media differently than I had originally planned. (Also, apparently bariatric post-op insomnia is a thing! Yippee!)

So here is my conundrum. Sometimes, I just like to talk (my family loves those times the best). Seriously though, there are times when things cross my mind, and I think “someone needs to hear this” or “I wonder if anyone else has thought about this”. My midnight meandering helped me see that I needed a place to share my thoughts, and I knew my next step was to explain how I was going to do this before I went any further. Ergo, a couple of examples will help all this make sense.

Today, I had some random thoughts I wanted to share with an audience. I also wanted to give some little tidbits of information that weren’t necessarily worthy of an entire blog post but would be useful to other bariatric patients. So I shared a thought or two on my blog’s Facebook page. For this reason, and to give my ramblings a place to go, my Facebook page will have two purposes. New blog posts will always be shared so anyone who “likes” the page will have access to posts without having to go to the blog website. In addition, the Facebook page will give me a place to share my thoughts on various topics on a more spur-of-the-moment basis. I will have another way to interact with followers through comments, and posts will not always carry the weight (pun intended) of a full blog post.

After sharing some thoughts on Facebook, I started thinking about pictures that I am taking to document some of my WLS journey. I don’t want to share those pictures randomly here because I feel like adding those into my blog would be…well, a little crude. There are parts of this journey that are not pleasing to the eye. Not everyone wants/needs to see the good, the bad, AND the ugly!. However, someone who is investigating WLS for themselves would be very interested in seeing/hearing about those parts of my journey. So I decided to start sharing my pictorial journey on my Instagram page under the same blog name.

In addition to Facebook and Instagram, I have a “Weigh Over My Head” Pinterest page, but those boards are being fed here to the blog site through different pages where you will find items of interest to me. Those pages are tabbed along the top of the blog screen as well as in the sidebar of the Home page. I also have a Twitter account, @weighovermyhead, but will only be using that platform to share new blog posts. I’m not a big Twitter user at this point.

Well, there you have it in a very big nutshell. Glad that’s out of the way. All the “Weigh Over My Head” social media accounts are tabbed at the top above the heading for the blog. I hope you take some time to check them out, but I understand if that’s not your cup of tea. Speaking of tea, I have a date with a wonderfully fragrant cup of orange spice. Thank you for sticking to the end.
